Why It Matters

Why School Vaccination Programmes Matter

Educational settings bring together large numbers of students, staff and visitors, creating environments where infectious diseases can spread more easily.

Vaccination remains one of the most effective public health interventions available, helping to protect individuals, reduce disease transmission and support healthier learning environments.

Schools increasingly recognise the value of proactive healthcare initiatives that support:

  • Student wellbeing
  • Disease prevention
  • Health education
  • Attendance and engagement
  • Safeguarding responsibilities
  • Public health awareness

Meningitis B Vaccination for Students

Protecting young people against serious disease.

Meningococcal Group B disease (MenB) is a serious bacterial infection that can cause meningitis and septicaemia.

Although uncommon, the disease can develop rapidly and may become life-threatening. Vaccination provides an important opportunity to reduce the risk of serious illness and protect young people during key stages of education and development.

Vaccination may be particularly relevant for:

  • Secondary school students
  • Sixth form students
  • University entrants
  • Boarding school pupils
  • Young adults living in shared accommodation
  • International students
Starting 20 July 2026

The New NHS MenB Vaccination Programme

What schools and parents need to know. From 20 July 2026, the NHS is introducing a new MenB vaccination programme aimed at improving protection among eligible young people entering university and residential educational settings. The programme represents a significant public health initiative designed to help reduce the risk of meningococcal disease among older teenagers and young adults.

Eligible Groups

  • Year 13 students
  • First-time university entrants
  • Young people entering residential educational settings

Students and families should consult NHS guidance and their GP practice for the latest information regarding eligibility and booking arrangements.

How Schools Can Support the Programme

Schools play an important role in supporting awareness and helping students access reliable health information. While schools are not responsible for delivering healthcare services, they remain trusted sources of information for students and families.

  • Sharing information with parents
  • Including vaccination guidance within university preparation materials
  • Encouraging students to review their vaccination status
  • Signposting families to NHS and healthcare resources

Providing timely information can help students access protection before leaving school and entering higher education.
